Ankle Arthroscopy

Ankle Arthroscopy

Ankle Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a small camera (arthroscope) is introduced into the ankle joint through small incisions to allow the surgeon to visualise, diagnose, and treat a range of conditions affecting the ankle. The technique provides a clear view of the joint structures with minimal disruption to the surrounding tissues compared to open surgery.

What Conditions Can Be Treated with Ankle Arthroscopy?

Ankle arthroscopy is used to diagnose and treat a variety of ankle conditions, including:

  • Anterior ankle impingement: Removal of bony spurs or soft tissue causing pain and restricted dorsiflexion at the front of the ankle
  • Posterior ankle impingement: Addressing posterior bony or soft tissue obstruction causing pain behind the ankle
  • Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT): Treatment of cartilage and bone defects on the talus within the ankle joint
  • Ankle instability: Arthroscopic assessment and, in some cases, repair of ligament injuries
  • Synovitis and loose bodies: Removal of inflamed synovial tissue or loose fragments within the joint
  • Ankle arthritis: Debridement procedures to reduce pain in selected patients
  • Diagnostic arthroscopy: Assessment of the joint when clinical and imaging findings are inconclusive

How Is Ankle Arthroscopy Performed?

The procedure is carried out through two or more small portals (incisions) around the ankle. A small camera is introduced through one portal and provides a high-definition, magnified view of the inside of the joint. Specialised instruments are inserted through additional portals to carry out the necessary treatment.

The small size of the incisions and the avoidance of extensive muscle dissection are key advantages of the arthroscopic approach compared to open ankle surgery.

Benefits of Ankle Arthroscopy

  • Minimally invasive with small incisions and reduced soft tissue disruption
  • Comprehensive visualisation of the ankle joint
  • Accurate diagnosis and treatment of intra-articular pathology
  • Reduced post-operative pain and swelling compared to open surgery
  • Day-case or short-stay procedure in most cases
  • Supports a more rapid return to daily activities and sport

Recovery After Ankle Arthroscopy

Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed within the ankle.

Simple Debridement or Impingement Release
Weight-bearing is often possible relatively early, with a progressive return to activity over several weeks.

Osteochondral Lesion Treatment
May require a period of protected weight-bearing to allow cartilage healing, followed by structured rehabilitation.

General Recovery
Physiotherapy supports restoration of ankle strength, proprioception, and movement. Return to sport and demanding physical activity is guided by clinical progress.

Why Choose Dr. Raja Nadar for Ankle Arthroscopy?

Dr. Raja Nadar has fellowship training in Foot and Ankle surgery, including exposure to ankle arthroscopy as part of his dedicated foot and ankle fellowship. His clinical experience across arthroscopic procedures and foot and ankle conditions enables him to offer comprehensive management of ankle pathology using minimally invasive techniques where appropriate.
